Jonny McFarlane has shot down reports that Rangers are interested in signing free agent midfielder Marco van Ginkel.

The Scottish Sun reported on Wednesday (31 July) that the Gers are eyeing a "stunning" double Dutch swoop for Van Ginkel and Robin Propper.

While a deal for FC Twente defender Propper looks imminent [Four Lads Had A Dream, 31 July], a move for Van Ginkel does not appear to be on the cards.

Newsquest Scotland journalist McFarlane posted via his personal X account [31 July]: "I'm told Dutch international midfielder Marco van Ginkel won't be coming to Rangers.

Rangers should forget about Marco van Ginkel signing

This transfer rumour appeared to come out of the blue and it does not look as though it will develop any further.

Van Ginkel is a free agent after leaving Vitesse at the end of last season, which always makes a player an enticing prospect.

He also has eight caps for the Netherlands at senior level, albeit the most recent of those came seven years ago when on Chelsea's books.

A quick look at Van Ginkel's figures suggest he is not really a player worth pursuing, especially given he turns 32 before the end of the year.

While Propper's arrival is getting supporters excited, it is difficult to get worked up about the prospect of the club not moving for Van Ginkel.

Rangers will hopefully make more signings beyond that of Propper, but only players who will enhance the starting line-up should be targeted.
