Kemar Roofe is delighted to hear that Allan McGregor is back in a new role with Rangers.

The 44-year-old ended his long and successful playing career in the summer of 2023.

Developing through the youth ranks at Auchenhowie, he would first join Rangers all the way back in 1998, and even made a first-team bench by the following year.

However, it wasn't until February 2002 that McGregor was afforded the chance to make his senior debut, doing so against Forfar Athletic in the Scottish Cup aged 20.

In total, the goalkeeper would go on to make over 500 appearances for Rangers, winning four Scottish Premiership titles, three Scottish Cups as well as three League Cups respectively.

Now the Gers Hall of Fame inductee is back at Ibrox once again, and former striker Roofe is a big fan of the role Rangers have found for him.

What has Kemar Roofe said on Allan McGregor's Rangers return?

McGregor has been in a coaching role with Rangers since retiring from football, working as interim goalkeeping coach during Barry Ferguson's brief time in charge after Philippe Clement's exit last year.

However, that was only a temporary role for the Gers great, but that's not the case for him this time round.

Announced on Wednesday evening, McGregor is replacing Sal Bibbo as Rangers' new lead goalkeeping coach.

In response to this, a host of his former Ibrox comrades have been reacting on Instagram, with Ianis Hagi saying "Fantastic", as well as John Lundstram leaving a love heart eyes emoji in the comments.

But it's what ex-Bears striker Roofe has said on the appointment which will no doubt fill Rangers chiefs with confidence that they've made a good decision here.

"Exactly where a club legend should be…..he made me realise how important the club is," the now-33-year-old free agent said.

Where McGregor will be most valuable to Rangers

Undoubtedly one of the very best goalkeepers to have ever played for Rangers, McGregor instantly commands respect around Ibrox.

His success and vast amounts of experience between the sticks offers an endless fountain of knowledge for Gers goalies working under him to drink from.

It's in this respect as to why McGregor will perhaps do his best work, and provide the most value in his new role, with the young shot-stoppers coming through.

Not to say that senior players like Ivor Pandur or Liam Kelly can't learn anything new or improve their games under him, as that of course is absolutely not the case.

But for any young keeper at the start of their career, to now have the chance to learn from McGregor at an early age is sure to give them a huge advantage over others, and set them up for success and improvement straight away.
