James Tavernier drops possible hint on new club as Rangers hero reacts to transfer
James Tavernier is still on the search for his next opportunity after leaving Rangers at the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
The 34-year-old announced his decision to call time on his 11-year stay at Ibrox in late April.
His 565 appearances and 143 goals as well as his crowning achievement of winning the Scottish Premiership in 2020-21 sees him leave a legacy as an all-time Rangers great.
Now a free agent, Tavernier has already been linked with a host of clubs, with sides across European football reportedly eyeing up his signature.
However, the Gers legend wasn't the only big-name right-back to hit the free agent market after the end of last season.
Kieran Trippier announced he'd be leaving Newcastle United in early May, and the 35-year-old has already found his new home.
James Tavernier likes Kieran Trippier's Wolves announcement
One club that have been strongly linked with signing Tavernier this summer is Wolves.
Rob Edwards' side have just been relegated from the Premier League to the Championship, and aren't wasting any time in bolstering their ranks ahead of a promotion push in 2026-27.
It's been confirmed that Wanderers have signed Trippier on a two-year deal following his release from Newcastle, and the former England international has taken to Instagram to say his first words as a Wanderer.
"I am delighted to join Wolves, a new chapter and one I’m ready for," Trippier said.
"I’m looking forward to working with the team, and giving my all on the pitch. I can’t wait to meet the fans and play at Molineux."
Interestingly, Tavernier liked Trippier's post announcing his move to Wolves, in what could be perceived as a possible hint that he's got his eyes on Molineux as well.
Might Wolves sign Tavernier and Trippier?
However, Wolves signing Trippier does beg the question of whether they really need both him and Tavernier in their team for next season.
Both are attacking-minded right-backs in their mid-30s, and Wanderers have just released a veteran option in Matt Doherty who can play there as well.
Meanwhile, Ki-Jana Hoever, Rodrigo Gomes and Jackson Tchatchoua respectively can all operate at right-back and wing-back for Wolves as well, meaning they aren't exactly light at the position either.
As such, it does now feel unlikely that Wolves would want Tavernier after signing Trippier, as he will surely have joined on the premise of regular football at Molineux.
Tavernier can play centre-back if needed though, so it's perhaps possible that Wanderers have a plan to alter his position slightly and thus still have interest in securing his services this summer.
