Ianis Hagi exit: Quick agreement wanted for Rangers transfer in January
Ianis Hagi could be set for a January departure from Rangers following new Romanian ownership at Genoa, according to Corriere dello Sport.
On page 22 of Saturday's edition of the Italian outlet [28 December], it is reported that Hagi is a primary target for incoming owner Dan Sucu, also owner of Rapid Bucharest - a club in Hagi's homeland who had previously attempted to prise him from Ibrox [Fanatik, 20 August].
Hagi politely turned down a summer return to Romania and has since returned from the abyss at Rangers as Philippe Clement brought him back into the first-team picture, but he has still struggled to get going this term.
The report states Serie A outfit Genoa are "very close" to the Gers playmaker, who starred for his nation in the knockout stages at Euro 2024 and has previously played in Italy during his career with Fiorentina.
Rangers ace Ianis Hagi to swap Ibrox for Italy?
Despite Hagi's standoff with Rangers - driven by a clause in his contract - the attacking midfielder was eventually welcomed back with the club under intense pressure.
This helped the 26-year-old strike the 100-appearance mark at Ibrox, and he is a regular starter at present for Clement, but he has not always delivered in blue this season.
Genoa are 13th in Serie A with just three wins so far this campaign, and under new chief Sucu will be looking to find an upturn in form this season with some astute January recruitment.
Given Sucu's Romanian background and strong relationships in football across the nation - not to mention his ownership of Rapid - it seems from the outside a match made in heaven for Hagi to experience a fresh start.
What Gers fans, teammates and Clement alike may consider to this idea is another matter, with the player in a precarious contractual position of 18 months remaining on his current deal.
Hagi and his camp may seek assurances from Ibrox that he will be cherished in the long term and that the club can consistently go on to push for trophies.
