How much Rangers have bid for Kevin Kelsy as Portland Timbers sale stance revealed

Rangers have made an official approach to sign Portland Timbers striker Kevin Kelsy.

Derek McInnes looks to have been forced back into the striker market following Youssef Chermiti's injury.

However, the 55-year-old is already coming under major scrutiny due to the lack of impact from many of his new summer signings.

Rangers have so far added nine new players this summer, but they're now out of the Europa League and winless from their first four competitive games of 2026-27.

If McInnes is to stick around at Ibrox, then he's going to have to find solutions and see his new recruits start stepping up fast.

So, he may now have identified a young striker who has the potential to come in and rescue his position.

How Kevin Kelsy feels about leaving Portland Timbers as Rangers bid made

Numerous reports began to emerge on Thursday crediting Rangers with a keen interest in signing Kelsy.

The 22-year-old is a Venezuelan international and has been with MLS outfit Portland Timbers since January 2025.

And now, MLS insider Tom Bogert claims via X that Rangers have submitted a bid in the region of £7.4million to sign him.

However, Bogert claims that Portland aren't actively looking to sell him this summer, whilst Kelsy isn't pushing to leave either.

It's also stated that Rangers aren't alone in the race to sign Kelsy, but no transfer rivals are explicitly named in Bogert's post.

But what is Kelsy's contract situation in Portland, and does it work for or against Rangers?

How long Kelsy has left on his Portland Timbers contract

Kelsy is currently in the goalscoring form of his senior career with Portland in 2026.

He's netted 10 times in 20 total appearances so far this year, with nine of those coming in 17 MLS games.

That means he's already eclipsed his 2025 return where he scored seven in 37 MLS outings, and so it's no surprise to see transfer interest arriving.

As confirmed via Portland Timbers' official website, Kelsy is contracted there until December 2028, but the MLS side have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

So, with over two years still left to run on his deal, Timbers are in a strong position to hold out for a premium fee for Kelsy this summer.

Rangers will have their work cut out for them if they wish to bring the highly-rated young forward to Govan before the transfer deadline.
