Rangers are working hard at re-shaping their squad for Derek McInnes this summer.

Danny Rohl's departure for RB Salzburg left the Gers searching for another new manager this summer.

But the Light Blues' hierarchy acted quick to poach McInnes from last season's surprise package Hearts.

Work has been gathering at a pace to improve McInnes' squad too, with Lawrence Shankland also making the move from Tyncastle.

Ross McCrorie and Ben Godfrey have been drafted in to improve the defence, while Hull City goalkeeper Ivor Pandor and Dundee defender Luke Graham are reportedly on Rangers' radar.

But the ghost of Rangers past is still rearing its ugly head, creating a headache for McInnes that had abolutely nothing to do with him.

Rangers in a bind after latest transfer decision

When 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh completed their purchase of Rangers, there were a myriad of issues to resolve.

Not least among them was Rangers' shoddy record in the tranfsfer market, and a need to drastically improve their recruitment record.

Now, one of those failures in the transfer market has reared its ugly head, in what will be an unwanted distraction for all.

Jose Cifuentes is back at Rangers, after Toronto FC confirmed the end of his loan spell.

The Ecuador midfielder - signed during the ill-fated Michael Beale era in 2023 - made the switch to the MLS outfit last summer, and scored once and assisted four in 17 appearances.

A purchase option was included in the deal, but it looks as though Rangers are left needing to find a solution for Cifuentes.

Rangers: Jose Cifuentes' future to be resolved soon as talks confirmed to be underway with Toronto

What is Jose Cifuentes' contract situation at Rangers?

Cifuentes has just never truly managed to fit in at Govan, and it appears unlikely a spot will be found for him under McInnes.

The former LAFC man has been shipped out on loan three times now, having had stints at Cruzeiro and Aris before making the switch to Toronto.

Frustratingly for Rangers, Cifuentes still has another 12 months to run on the four-year deal he signed back in 2023.

It would be safe to assume that Rangers will just attempt to find Cifuentes another new home, with a permanent exit obviously the ideal outcome.

But is a headache the club and McInnes could do without as they look to put together a squad capable of challenging for the title.
