Connor Goldson will always be remembered fondly as a modern-day Rangers legend at Ibrox.

The towering defender was at the heart of the Ibrox invincibles under Steven Gerrard, but was a key figure for years either side of that.

From the incredible Europa League run to the final and several pieces of domestic silverware, Goldson did it all.

Just as James Tavernier did this summer, though, his contract would expire to seal his free exit back in 2024.

That took Goldson to Cyrpus, where he signed for Aris Limassol.

And after two seasons there, he has controversially crossed the city divide to join Apollon Limassol, which likely won't go down too well.

Connor Goldson transfer stokes controversial new fire

Despite the anger possibly surrounding the move, you couldn't tell that on social media.

Apollon and Goldson appeared to flashback to his Rangers days, saying he looks better in blue, compared to the green of Aris.

That is clearly a nod to Rangers and Celtic.

Confirming the move on Instagram, plenty of figures from his time at Ibrox responded to the fiery transfer.

Jack Butland and Danilo liked the post, while Ross McCausland commented with a good luck message.

Ex-teammates such as Tavernier, Ianis Hagi and Leon Balogun were also spotted among the likes.

Could Rangers sign another defender this summer?

Goldson played over 2,500 minutes in the Cypriot League last season, but his days of top-level football are behind him.

John Souttar and Emmanuel Fernandez are currently the two senior options available to Derek McInnes, although Clinton Nsiala is also back at Auchenhowie.

Ross McCrorie has signed at right-back, with two other defensive signings likely still needed.

A new left-back behind Tuur Rommens and a central option are needed.

McInnes will know that, and he'll want better options than were signed last season on loan for Russell Martin and Danny Rohl.

It has been a wild start to the summer with Lawrence Shankland, McInnes and McCrorie, but so much more is now needed.

But, after promises from Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers, that is expected from everybody around Ibrox.

And as Goldson's controversial move shows, anything can happen in the transfer window.
