Chris Sutton may be right with Elijah Just verdict, Rangers need to act

Published on

Chris Sutton raved about Elijah Just after the rumoured Rangers target struck twice for New Zealand in their World Cup draw with Iran.

Motherwell winger Just has been heavily linked with a move to Rangers in recent months, as well as Scottish Premiership rivals Celtic.

Just scored seven goals and assisted seven more in 35 Scottish Premiership matches last season.

The 26-year-old has carried that form into the World Cup, as he scored twice in a thrilling Group G clash with Iran in Los Angeles in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Just's profile is only going to rise as a result of his impressive showing in the United States.

And as Sutton pointed out on BBC's coverage of the match, that can only be bad news for his suitors.

Elijah Just price tag shoots up after World Cup scenes

New Zealand will be disappointed they were unable to overcome Iran, having twice led at SoFi Stadium.

Just can more than hold his head up high, though, after taking his chances well.

After netting the second of his goals, Sutton said: "Motherwell will be happy. That's another few zeros on the price tag of Just."

While that is hyperbolic, the point Sutton is making is actually spot on - there's a first for everything, after all.

You can more than expect Motherwell to add an additional million onto Just's value just by virtue of this one performance.

The Well do not need to sell, so if an interested team is not willing to cough up, that is on them.

What would Just bring to Rangers under Derek McInnes?

Derek McInnes' appointment at Ibrox is imminent and already he has one new face through the door in Lawrence Shankland.

There has been strong talk of Cammy Devlin also arriving from Hearts, with Just a third potential signing from a Scottish Premiership rival.

There is a risk Rangers are signing too many players from the same league, albeit each of those bring something different.

In Just's case, his 14 direct goal involvements last season is quite clearly something McInnes would love to add to Rangers.

On top of that, Just played in a number of different positions last season, so that versatility could come in handy.

Based on the fact the New Zealand star's valuation is only going to go up, however, Rangers will need to move now if the interest is there.
