Aston Villa are reportedly likely to be out of the running for Rangers defender Calvin Bassey after signing Diego Carlos.

According to TEAMtalk, signing Diego Carlos from Sevilla would mean that they would not pursue the services of the Nigerian this summer.

Villa manager Steven Gerrard shared a good working relationship with Bassey at Ibrox and was thought to have been keen on a reunion.

Good news

Villa are a club that appear to be on the rise and their billionaire owners are willing to loosen the pursestrings.

Despite former manager Dean Smith being underwhelming at the helm, he was backed to such a great extent.

Gerrard, on the other hand, is proving to be a competent appointment and if he wanted Bassey that badly, he probably would have got his man.

The report claims that West Ham are also interested in signing the Nigerian so Gers fans cannot rest easy just yet.

However, the fact that the Hammers play in the Conference League while Bassey could feature in the Champions League at Rangers next season, may help him make up his mind.

These will be tricky times for Rangers as a number of their players are going to be on the radars of English clubs that can offer them higher wages and a chance to play in the Premier League in an important World Cup year.
