Ancelotti 'holds key to Cerny staying at Rangers' as confidante speaks out

Rahul Lakhani

Rahul has covered Rangers on Ibrox News since joining Breaking Media in March 2025. He has previously written for Goalkeeper.com, Planet Football, Snack Media, GRV Media and others since graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2021. During his time in Edinburgh, Rahul would regularly trek across to Glasgow to watch Rangers in action at Ibrox, during the days of Pedro Caixinha and Steven Gerrard's managerial spells.

Rangers struck gold when they signed winger Vaclav Cerny on loan from Wolfsburg last summer, and they want to keep him at the club.

Cerny has been one of Rangers' better performers in an otherwise disappointing season for the club, and continued his fine campaign with another goal against Aberdeen on Sunday.

The 27-year-old's future is unclear, and with Rangers also aiming to appoint a new manager once their takeover is finalised, there is plenty to be discussed before any decision is made.

Rangers fans would love to see Cerny stay at Ibrox, and one of their managerial targets could now facilitate this.

Rangers linked with Davide Ancelotti

Rangers have now been linked with Davide Ancelotti, son of the legendary Carlo, as their next manager, with the Italian about to leave his assistant role at Real Madrid.

Ancelotti is yet to manage his own side, but has been an assistant alongside Carlo at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton and Real Madrid.

Scottish manager Tam Courts, formerly of Dundee United, worked alongside Ancelotti when they both achieved their coaching badges, and he has explained why he could help keep Rangers' best players at Ibrox.

Cerny's record at Rangers

"He’s a big name," he told the Glasgow Times (12 May).

"Players would want to come, not just to play for Rangers, but for him as well.

"And if top players at Ibrox are casting their eye elsewhere, I think they’d be interested in working with Davide if he was appointed."

Ancelotti can keep Cerny at Rangers

Despite his inexperience as a head coach, Ancelotti has worked alongside some of the biggest names in football, including Robert Lewandowski, Vinicius Junior and Toni Kroos.

The 35-year-old is highly regarded by those who worked with him, and his name has already put him in good stead for a managerial position.

Having someone of Ancelotti's status at Ibrox could help keep the best players at Rangers, just as Courts - who knows Ancelotti - says.

If the Gers want to make his loan permanent, they will have to agree a fee with Wolfsburg and convince Cerny to stay.

Nicolas Raskin has also been linked with a move away after an excellent campaign, and Ancelotti's arrival could ensure that he is willing to remain for another year to see the kind of impact he can make.
