Tony Cascarino was a fan of Steven Gerrard's work at Rangers.

The former Gers boss is forever going to be remembered for the work he did in Govan.

The Liverpool legend has been constantly linked with a move back to the Bears since leaving in 2021.

Gerrard held conversations with Andrew Cavenagh and Co. after Russell Martin's departure, but decided against making the move back to Ibrox, admitting it wasn't the right time for him to return to management.

The 49ers turned to Danny Rohl instead, and once the German head coach chose to leave the Light Blues for RB Salzburg in the summer, the club's hierarchy turned their attention to Derek McInnes.

Rangers are currently thriving with McInnes at the helm, but Gerrard's next move may not be far around the corner, with Cascarino reacting to the latest on the former England midfielder.

Gerrard wasn't ever a top candidate once Rohl left, as the 49ers were fixated on bringing McInnes to Ibrox after his stellar season with Hearts.

Since leaving Govan, Gerrard has gained Premier League experience with Aston Villa before making the move to Saudi Arabia in 2023.

The 46-year-old departed the Middle East in January of 2025 and is currently in the free agent manager market.

While speaking on talkSPORT, Shebahn Aherne discussed rumours linking Gerrard to EFL Championship club Wrexham, with Cascarino offering a straight answer on whether he thinks the former Gers boss deserves the gig.

Aherne said: "When you're hearing names like Gerrard being rumoured to the club to take over, I don't know what that's about. Is he better than Phil Parkinson?"

Cascarino replied: "Steven did exceptionally well at Liverpool’s academy, and it got him the job at Glasgow Rangers, where he did brilliantly well.

"He deserves an opportunity somewhere down the line; I don’t think he deserves the Wrexham job yet."

Wrexham are currently struggling in the Championship under Phil Parkinson, despite the Red Dragons' ambition to be promoted to the Premier League.

Former Burnley boss Scott Parker has also been linked with the job.

Why Rangers fans will love Steven Gerrard response in 'toughest' Derek McInnes claim

How does Derek McInnes' record match up to Gerrard's at Rangers so far?

Rangers fans will be happy with the appointment of McInnes so far, with the Gers currently presenting themselves as strong contenders to win the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard had a 61 per cent win ratio in his first season for the Bears, with a 2.0 points per game record in the 2018-19 campaign.

He then improved upon these statistics in the three seasons that followed in Govan.

McInnes currently has a 75 per cent win percentage at Rangers, with a 2.4 points per game record.

Currently, the 55-year-old is having a better first season at Ibrox than Gerrard did.
