Rangers may have dropped the ball by not bringing back Steven Gerrard.

The Gers are on the lookout for a new head coach as Danny Rohl looks set to depart in the very near future.

After being linked with the sack at Ibrox previously, the German is now set to join RB Salzburg as their new boss.

A move away from Govan is edging ever closer as the Austrian Bundesliga side want his services to replace Daniel Beichler.

Light Blues chairman Andrew Cavenagh and CEO Jim Gillespie have already moved quickly to try and bring in Derek McInnes from Hearts.

That move looks set to pay off, although it may prove to be the wrong call as Gerrard primes himself for a return to management.

Steven Gerrard wants Steve Holland to join coaching team from Manchester United

There have been calls to bring in the former Gers boss despite his controversial departure in November 2021.

He has been strongly linked with a return to Govan over the years, but has never been the final choice.

Russell Martin and Rohl have beaten him to the punch recently and now McInnes looks set to do the same in the coming hours or days.

That decision may go down well for the most part, but Gerrard may leave them to regret it once again.

Alan Nixon reported on Sunday via Patreon that the 46-year-old wants to add Manchester United coach Steve Holland to his coaching staff.

The "ambitious" move is said to be part of his preparations for "an ideal managerial team" ahead of his next job which could be Burnley after he wanted a Rangers return, but ultimately missed out.

Gerrard's number two was previously Michael Beale, but he wants a change in that role.

Former England assistant Holland is wanted as his first choice and formal move could be made once the Liverpool legend has sealed his personal future.

What would Gerrard and Holland bring to Rangers?

The Ibrox faithful will know exactly what they get with the 46-year-old after his previous spell.

His passion was infectious and clearly had a positive impact on his players as he won the Scottish Premiership before he left.

That paired with the coaching expertise of a number two worked well in Govan and could have been repeated with Holland.

The 56-year-old currently finds himself with Man United alongside Michael Carrick having previously worked with England and Chelsea.

He has bags of experience as a coach and played a key role in the Three Lions' resurgence under Gareth Southgate.

That won't exactly matter to the Ibrox faithful, but is proof of the work he can do with an under performing squad.

Rangers look set to miss out on Gerrard and Holland, so will be keeping a close eye on how McInnes works out.
