Rangers: Barry Ferguson 'sick and tired' as he reacts to Derek McInnes appointment

Published on

Rangers officially announced the appointment of Derek McInnes this week, with Barry Ferguson delighted by that news.

McInnes' drawn-out move from Scottish Premiership rivals Hearts was made official on Wednesday.

That was after Danny Rohl's appointment at RB Salzburg was also made official.

The Rangers boyhood fan will now get going at Ibrox over the next couple of weeks, having long been linked with the job.

McInnes is Rangers' fifth permanent manager since Giovanni van Bronckhorst departed in November 2022.

But Ferguson is hopeful the Scotsman will last much longer than the long list of names he is following in the steps of.

Barry Ferguson says Derek McInnes ticks one key box for Rangers

The general consensus among the Rangers fanbase is that the appointment of McInnes is good news.

It seemed certain Rohl would lead Rangers into the 2026-27 campaign, but football can quickly change.

McInnes may not have a reputation of winning trophies, but his work at Hearts last season was nothing short of sensational.

On top of that, he has strong Ibrox links and - as pointed out by Ferguson for the Daily Record - he will not see Rangers as a stepping stone.

"I’m sick and tired of seeing other managers coming here using Ibrox as a stopping off point en route to what they might believe is a bigger club or bigger league," Ferguson wrote.

"I want to make this clear. Rangers is no stepping stone. You’re not going to leave Ibrox and find yourself a bigger job.

"Derek will realise that and realise how big an opportunity he now has to write his name into the history books."

There is arguably no bigger job for McInnes right now at club level, although the Scotland job could be enticing down the line.

That will not be for a while longer yet, though, and there is no reason why he cannot remain Rangers boss for a number of years to come.

How long have recent Rangers managers lasted at Ibrox?

Rohl officially lasted 240 days before walking away from the Rangers job and taking over at Salzburg.

That is a different situation to Russell Martin, who was at the helm for 122 days before being sacked after a disastrous spell.

Martin succeeded Philippe Clement, who was in charge for far longer at one year and 131 days.

Van Bronckhorst is the only other manager to last more than a year at Ibrox in the past five years, which is pretty telling.

McInnes knows he has his work cut out, but there is no reason why he can't last a lot longer than those aforementioned let-downs.
