Danny Rohl's confession on Rangers return should raise alarm bells with fans

Danny Rohl is open to the possibility of one day returning as Rangers manager.

The German lasted just eight months in the Ibrox hotseat before departing for Red Bull Salzburg.

Rohl's tenure promised much, but ultimately delivered little as a late-season collapse saw their Scottish Premiership title dreams go up in smoke.

Derek McInnes was swiftly brought in to to replace Rohl, and there is a good feeling about how he will manage expectations at Ibrox.

Certainly, the changes have been rung during pre-season, with more moves expected to add to McInnes' squad in the coming weeks.

But, regardless of how things transpire under McInnes, Rohl's latest confession about a potential return to Ibrox should cause alarm bells.

What did Danny Rohl say about potential Rangers return?

Ibrox News previously covered Rohl's admission that he did not fully understand the scale of the Rangers job when he took over.

In fairness to Rohl, he inherited an absolute horror show after the disastrous but mercifully short tenure of Russell Martin.

The German did his best charm offensive to win over doubting supporters, and he did a very good job at cutting the gap to Celtic and Hearts last term.

But the way Rangers crumbled, and the way he bolted at the first opportunity means there is no way he should ever be given another crack at the job.

Speaking to the Daily Record, though, his "why not?" reply suggests it is something he would be open to.

"My goal is to win titles here at Red Bull Salzburg. But in football, you can never say never," he said.

“A lot of what I feel about Rangers is that it’s a mission that was not completed. So why not?

“Now, I know what happens there and what you have to be."

Look, there is little doubt that Rohl is an extremely talented coach.

You do no work for the likes of Bayern Munich and Germany unless you have something about you.

And he did do an excellent rescue job at Sheffield Wednesday when he was first appointed by the Owls.

But early in his head coaching career, Rohl has already developed an ugly habit of bolting when the chips are down and appears mainly to be about self-preservation.

His falling out with captain James Tavernier is also a scenario that could and should have been so easily avoided.

So, if he did ever want to return, it should always be a case of thanks but no thanks.

Rohl had the chance to do something really special at Rangers, but he decided to go elsewhere, that's a choice he must live with.
