Danny Rohl brutally exposes Rangers issue in new interview - but it's an easy fix

Danny Rohl has spoken openly about why he failed to succeed during his short time as Rangers boss.

The German spent just eight months in the Ibrox dugout before joining RB Salzburg in June.

Rohl's exit came as a shock, having been given the board's backing amid previous links with Wolfsburg.

Rangers wasted no time at all in moving on, with Derek McInnes appointed as new head coach.

The Gers are now embarking on yet another new chapter in the Andrew Cavenagh regime, but the underlying issues still remain.

If it was not already clear beforehand, Rohl has now exposed those said issues in a new interview.

Danny Rohl explains difference between Rangers and Salzburg

Rohl is getting his feet under the table at his new club in Austria, with Salzburg's pre-season fixtures already under way.

Arguably the biggest takeaway from a new interview given in Austria, as relayed by Daily Sport, is that Jurgen Klopp did indeed play a part in his decision to join Salzburg.

However, from a Rangers perspective, there was some insight shared as to why Rohl failed at Ibrox - relatively speaking, of course.

"The nice thing about being here is that there's a sporting director," he said. "Previously, I've always been the one conducting these talks.

"Now, Marcus Mann and I will do it together. That's also the difference between Salzburg and Rangers: I find the collaboration with Marcus extremely positive."

Rohl, rather brutally, has made clear that a lack of true sporting director at Rangers worked against both him and the club.

There has been plenty of movement behind the scenes at Ibrox, but still there is a clear gap when it comes to a conduit between manager and Cavenagh, who ultimately signs off on deals.

What has Andrew Cavenagh said about Rangers' lack of sporting director?

Right now, Rangers have Dan Purdy working as technical director and Stig Inge Bjornebye working as performance director.

Both men are therefore involved in transfer activity in some regard, but not as a sporting director would work.

Speaking in March this year, Cavenagh said Rangers had abandoned plans to hire a new sporting director.

The position has been vacant since Kevin Thelwell left the role last November.

Cavenagh added he is happy with the current setup, but it is pretty damning that Rohl has come out and said this.

The obvious and easy fix is to bring someone into the club who can hold that position.

Cavenagh may not want to, but his track record does not exactly suggest what he knows is best for the club.

Rangers and Cavenagh will live and die by their transfer activity this summer. If the Gers struggle once again, they'll only have themselves to blame.
