Clement exit: Rangers boss 'serious contender' to quit Ibrox amid 'shock' news

Rangers could be on high alert as Belgium have sacked national team coach Dominico Tedesco with Philippe Clement potentially in line to succeed him, according to the Scottish Sun.

The report (17 January) reveals Clement could be in "serious" contention to take over his home nation's team, having been under sustained pressure in his role at Ibrox.

The 50-year-old has been a "shock name linked with becoming the new Belgium manager and following the dismissal of Tedesco, the prospect has become even more eye-opening.

Tedesco leaves his post having managed a 50 per cent win rate from 24 games in charge, was eliminated in the round of 16 at Euro 2024 and coming under fire from players and pundits.

Philippe Clement to leave Rangers for Belgium?

Clement is the focus of plenty of negative attention at Rangers right now, predominantly due to the public backing he has received from CEO Patrick Stewart.

The Belgian's mentality has to be admired in the wake of all the scrutiny, but one knows exactly what they are signing up for when they take over at an Old Firm club.

With a 64.1 per cent win rate in charge of the Gers, Clement actually has a worse percentage than Michael Beale, who to this day receives regular criticism from the Ibrox fanbase.

It could be an ideal opportunity for Clement at this stage of his coaching career to take over his own national side, for whom he scooped 38 caps and scored once as a player from 1998 to 2007.

He has secured wins in each of his last two games to recover somewhat from a poor run since the turn of the year, and takes on minnows Fraserburgh next up (19 January) in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup.
