Allan McGregor is set for a return to Rangers as part of Derek McInnes' backroom staff.

The 44-year-old is expected to be appointed as the Gers' new goalkeeping coach, with Sal Bibbo on his way to Coventry City to link up with Frank Lampard.

In the 2024-25 campaign, the legendary shot-stopper was part of Barry Ferguson's interim coaching staff before leaving after Russell Martin's appointment last summer.

McGregor is already at Auchenhowie, and his official appointment at Ibrox will be announced in the coming hours.

The ex-goalkeeper spent the majority of his career at the Glaswegian outfit, but also spent a decent amount of time at Hull City.

With the shot-stopper returning to Govan in a coaching capacity, Ibrox News looks at some of his most memorable moments at the club.

Allan McGregor's Old Firm save as Rangers win number 55

According to the Daily Record on 1 July, McGregor is about to make a "sensational return" to the Govan side, with one source claiming he would "do anything for the club".

The Scot was pivotal as the Gers won the Scottish Premiership title after a 10-year wait under Steven Gerrard, with one of his most important saves coming in the Old Firm derby in January 2021.

With the game level, the former shot-stopper pulled off a magnificent fingertip save to deny Leigh Griffiths from finding the back of the net, with the Light Blues eventually beating Neil Lennon's side 1-0.

The Light Blues moved 19 points clear of the Hoops after the win and eventually won the league after ending the campaign unbeaten.

Europa League heroics from Allan McGregor

In March 2021, during the Europa League last 16, the Gers faced Slavia Prague but were knocked out after losing 3-1 on aggregate.

The first leg in Czechia ended 1-1, but the result could have been much different had McGregor not pulled off one of his best saves in the 90th minute.

Lukas Masopust's header from a corner was destined to find the bottom corner, but the former Scotland international just about managed to keep it out.

Rangers penalty heroics vs Celtic

In the 2010-11 campaign, in the final Old Firm derby of the season on 24 April, McGregor denied Georgios Samaras from the spot in the 83rd minute.

Steven Davis was penalised for a foul on Anthony Stokes and the former Greece international had the chance to send Celtic to the top of the table.

The Scottish star was on hand for the Govan side at Ibrox and guessed correctly, to ensure the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

These are the types of heroics that Ivor Pandur and Liam Kelly will now be working with every single day.
