Why 'terrific' Olwethu Makhanya and Emmanuel Fernandez are the perfect fit for Rangers
Olwethu Makhanya and Emmanuel Fernandez have been immense for Rangers in recent weeks.
The two centre-backs have been Derek McInnes' preferred options in the backline as the Gers have gone on a seven-game winning run.
In the last seven matches, the Light Blues have kept five clean sheets.
Fernandez was a bit shaky at the start of the season at Ibrox, but Makhanya has brought much-needed calmness to the backline.
The Glaswegian outfit will surely rely heavily on the two African defenders, as Ben Godfrey is the only backup option McInnes has in his plans.
Having formed a solid partnership, the South African ace and Nigeria international have received plenty of praise recently.
How Olwethu Makhanya and Emmanuel Fernandez partnership works for Rangers
Makhanya has exceeded expectations at Rangers since arriving from the MLS and there's already talk of him moving down south.
The South Africa international isn't only defensively strong, but also has the technical ability to play out from the back — what everyone looks for in a modern-day centre-back.
Jim Duffy has been blown away by Makhanya and Fernandez playing together at the Gers, with the two complementing each other.
The former Dundee defender, who most recently managed Clyde, has been impressed by the two centre-backs at Ibrox.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 15 October, Duffy said, "I think Makhanya has been outstanding. When Fernandez was a bit shaky, he was the one stepping up to the plate.
"But both of them, the last month in particular, have been a terrific partnership because they can go man-for-man as they're strong, athletic and quick.
"They can play in a three or a four. They're getting to know each other. They're making that connection now. Rangers are looking much for solid."
Olwethu Makhanya and Emmanuel Fernandez pivotal to Derek McInnes' tactics
Makhanya and Fernandez's strength and speed mean they can cope effectively with Scottish football's challenges.
It hasn't been surprising to see the two defenders fit in rather seamlessly at Rangers.
While Fernandez has had slight lapses in judgement, he can dominate most games with his size.
Makhanya's comfort on the ball means he can drive forward and pick out a line-breaking pass.
The two centre-backs have also shown versatility to play in a back three when Dujon Sterling has tucked in and James Penrice has moved into midfield.
Makhanya and Fernandez's comfort in McInnes' different systems makes them the perfect fit for the Scottish manager's tactics.
