Why Rabbi Matondo could soon be facing off against Rangers just six months after Ibrox exit

Rabbi Matondo could be back playing at Ibrox against Rangers in the near future.

The Wales international was released by the Gers back in March, after four years at Ibrox.

Matondo never really got things going in a Rangers shirt, and was shunted out on loan during the 2024/25 season.

He made just one more league appearance when he returned to Govan the following campaign.

An agreement was found for Matondo to depart earlier this year, and he signed a short-term contract with Norwegian side Brann.

But now Matondo could soon be back playing in the Scottish Premiership, as a new opportunity has presented itself.

Who could former Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo sign for?

Matondo scored eight goals and provided 11 assists from 70 Rangers appearances during his four-season spell.

He failed to live up to expectations after being signed from Schalke by Giovanni van Bronckhorst in 2022.

The 26-year-old did not make much of an impact with Brann either, and is now once again without a club.

However, the Daily Record has reported that Matondo has flown out to La Manga to join Hibernian on their training camp.

Hibs have a new boss in the form of Marink Reedijk, who has replaced David Gray at Easter Road.

Matondo is now set to train with Hibs over the next week as he looks to convince Reedijk he is worthy of a deal.

Hibs are known to be looking for more options out wide, and Matondo might have to fill that problem.

When could Rabbi Matondo face Rangers?

There is obviously still a fair bit of work for Matondo to do before this question can fairly be answered.

But if Matondo does manage to earn a deal with Hibs, then a reunion with Rangers would be on the cards.

Rangers have already faced Hibernian at home this season, and were beaten 2-1 on home turf at Ibrox.

They are next slated to face Hibs on 5 December at Easter Road, so if Matondo does join that is when he could theoretically face his former employers.

Rangers will then host Hibernian again at Ibrox on April 27 next year.
