The timing of the international break was pretty frustrating for Rangers.

Derek McInnes' side had built some real momentum over the past month, and would have been keen to keep riding that wave.

The Gers racked up six straight consecutive victories in all competitions, including back-to-back Old Firm wins over Celtic.

The second of those, a 1-0 triumph at Parkhead, saw Rangers cut the gap on their rivals at the top of the Scottish Premiership to just two points.

There are still a couple of weeks to get through before Rangers are back in action domestically.

Of all the 14 players Rangers signed in a hectic summer transfer window, you can argue Olwethu Makhanya has made the biggest impressive.

Signed for what looks an absolute snip at £3million from Philadelphia Union, the South Africa international has made a fantastic start to his Rangers career.

No one wants to think about selling a 22-year-old with their best days still ahead of them, but the harsh reality is that if he continues to play like this then some huge offers will be incoming.

Hopefully, Rangers can get some good time out of Makhanya, because you feel like the centre-back could be crucial to their hopes of becoming the dominant force in Scotland once again.

Continuing on a slightly similar theme, is this Rangers defence the foundation that a Scottish Premiership title-winning team could be built on?

Makhanya has been absolutely outstanding, but Emmanuel Fernandez is looking way more comfortable next to his centre-back partner now, too.

Dujon Sterling has been hugely impressive at right-back, and if he stays fit there are not many better one-on-one defenders in the league.

James Penrice has made a great start to life at Ibrox, and has an intriguing battle on his hands up against Tuur Rommens.
