'Terrible' - BBC Sportsound pundit blasts what Benfica star did v Rangers last night in 2-2

Steven Thompson has blasted David Neres for what he did in the second half of the Rangers game against Benfica on Thursday (7 March).

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on Thursday (via BBC Sport, 09:18pm), the pundit didn't understand why the Brazilian international didn't shoot first time when a chance opened up for him.

He added that it was a "terrible decision" from the 27-year-old winger and that it was a "huge let-off" for the Gers, with the two sides playing out a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the Europa League last-16 clash.

"Why David Neres didn't shoot first time, I'll never know," said Thompson. "It's a terrible decision. It's a huge let-off for Rangers."

Rangers can be delighted with result against Benfica

It was a strange decision from Neres to not take a shot at goal straight away as a chance opened up for him at a crucial point in the game.

Benfica were trailing Rangers 2-1 at that point and, if the winger had converted, then he would've given his side more time to turn the result around.

They did eventually find the equaliser, though, when Connor Goldson put through his own net midway through the second half in the Portuguese capital.

Although a victory looked like a possibility for much of the game, Philippe Clement will be delighted with the application his side showed throughout the match in what is a notoriously difficult place to go.

The Light Blues have put themselves in an excellent position heading into the second leg at Ibrox on 14 March and you wouldn't put it past them making it into the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
