Tam McManus believes Rangers signing a new number nine in the January transfer window would make a "big difference" to their form.

At the moment, the Gers have three senior strikers within their ranks, but Cyriel Dessers has more often than not been the one chosen to lead the Gers' attacking line.

Speaking on the PLZ Soccer Show (27 November), pundit McManus shared his thoughts on what the Gers need to do in January.

“I think the main problem for Rangers now is the lack of a proper number nine,” he said.

“I look at the Rangers team, [Cyriel] Dessers played again at the weekend, hooked at half time, they bring Igamane on [he’s] pretty raw.

“I just think they’re really missing a good number nine, I think it would make a big difference.”

Rangers need to sign a replacement for Cyriel Dessers soon

Hamza Igamane was the new number nine that Philippe Clement chose to bring in over the summer and while he was in decent form for AS Far last season, he's failed to meet the standards expected of him this term.

Danilo is Rangers' other option for the number nine role, but his lack of reliability due to the sheer amount of injuries he's suffered has hindered the Ibrox outfit's progress this season.

What doesn't help matters much either is the fact that Dessers is the only natural number nine that was named in their Europa League squad, which has left Clement quite short up top and has caused the Nigeria international to often be run into the ground.

Rangers are still third in the Scottish Premiership and are 11 points adrift of first-placed Celtic and unless they manage to turn things around soon or bring in some new faces to bolster their ranks in January, it's hard to see how they'll be in the title race for much longer.
