Steven Thompson was unimpressed with James Tavernier's performance as Rangers beat Motherwell 2-1 at Hampden Park on Sunday.

The Gers came from behind to advance to the Scottish League Cup final with goals from Cyriel Dessers and Nedim Bajrami perhaps saving Philippe Clement's job.

However, despite the win, Thompson was less than impressed with Tavernier.

The ex-Rangers striker said on BBC Radio Scotland (via BBC Sport, 4:35 pm, 3 November), "Tavernier has not had a good afternoon, he's really struggled today.

"That miss compounding the misery."

Philippe Clement saved as Rangers beat Motherwell at Hampden Park

Had the Gers been beaten by Motherwell that might have been the end of the road for under-pressure Clement.

Therefore, at half-time, the Rangers boss would've been incredibly stressed after Andy Halliday had given Motherwell the lead in the first half.

However, they were able to turn things around with goals through Dessers and Bajrami. As a result, they now have a League Cup final against Celtic to look forward to.

While this could perhaps be a turning point for Clement at Ibrox, he will need to see much more from his key players going forward, particularly Tavernier.

Rangers will be looking to secure back-to-back League Cup wins when they take on the Hoops. However, it won't be easy, especially considering their struggles as of late and question marks over the manager's team selection.

Should they win though, that could be the turning point for Clement, and it might give Rangers the confidence to go on a run in the second half of the season.
