Steven Gerrard may not have written the final chapter of his story at Rangers just yet.

The 45-year-old has been away from Ibrox since he left to join Aston Villa back in November 2021, but that could be about to change in the aftermath of Russell Martin's sacking.

Gerrard has been heavily linked with a return to Rangers in recent days, with his former assistant Gary McAllister even suggesting that it cannot be ruled out.

Several other bosses are also in the frame to take over the reins in Govan, but it will be hard for the Gers to look past the man who delivered them their only title in the last 15 years.

Steven Gerrard tipped for Rangers return as board concerns raised

Gerrard effectively left the door open to a Rangers return, when he revealed that he is ready to get back into management during an interview with Rio Ferdinand via his YouTube channel.

The Liverpudlian has been out of work since his departure from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in January, and hasn't had a job in British football since he was sacked by Aston Villa in October 2022.

The likes of Danny Rohl, Derek McInnes and Rob Edwards are also being tipped as possible candidates, but the Gers may be lured by the idea of reuniting with a former hero.

Gerrard's managerial record at Rangers, as per Transfermarkt.

Ex-Aston Villa scout Bryan King - speaking exclusively to Ibrox News - believes that Gerrard would be the ideal candidate for Rangers, providing that he could get on with the board at Ibrox.

“From the names that I’ve seen mentioned, I think Gerrard would be the one," King said.

"He did a fair job at Rangers; he had them competing against Celtic. His work there led him to the Aston Villa job. He’s certainly a big name, and he has had success at Rangers.

"But would he get on with the board there? He must be thinking: ‘How on earth have Rangers got into this state?’

“He’s out of work, and it can’t get any worse for Rangers, if he goes in and does anything positive and they start getting results, then he’s the great saviour.”

Steven Gerrard appointment would bring a huge lift at Ibrox

Martin's tenure has left Rangers in a sizeable hole, with the team in disarray on the pitch after a woeful start to the season, and supporters feeling disconnected as a result.

It will take somethign fairly drastic to turn their campaign around, and securing the return of a former hero like Gerrard could be the perfect way to do that.

The former midfielder is still held in high regard among the fanbase, and he has a history of bringing success to Ibrox.

The mammoth task that has been left by Martin may mean that even he is ultimately unable to salvage anything from this season, but there is undoubtedly no better man to get Rangers back on track.
