Rahul has covered Rangers on Ibrox News since joining Breaking Media in March 2025. He has previously written for Goalkeeper.com, Planet Football, Snack Media, GRV Media and others since graduating from the University of Edinburgh in 2021. During his time in Edinburgh, Rahul would regularly trek across to Glasgow to watch Rangers in action at Ibrox, during the days of Pedro Caixinha and Steven Gerrard's managerial spells.

Steven Gerrard appears to be closing in on a return to the Rangers dugout, leading to mixed reactions from those surrounding Ibrox.

Gerrard is thought to be a frontrunner for the role as the Englishman weighs up a return to Ibrox under impending new American ownership.

Rangers need a major rebuild in the summer, and Gerrard has already successfully halted Celtic dominance in his first spell in Glasgow under similar circumstances.

However, he did have his critics, and Simon Jordan has pointed out that it was not all positive for the Liverpool legend in his last spell.

Jordan questions Gerrard backing in first Rangers spell

Some believe that Rangers need to go in a different direction from Gerrard as the 49ers Enterprises look to complete a takeover, which should see the new manager backed financially.

Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership as an invincible, but it was his only trophy despite building a strong squad, and many are not convinced he is the best candidate.

However, one fan called into talkSPORT (21 May) to point out that Gerrard was not backed in his previous spell, as he wanted to sign Kevin Nisbet from Hibernian in the summer of 2021, but was not given the funding before he jumped to Aston Villa.

In response, Jordan insisted that Gerrard targeting Nisbet was a bad move anyway, given his lack of success since, which may have been pointed out by the board.

"It's interesting that fans have these perspectives," he said.

"He went on to score five goals in 26 games the following season. He's now languishing at Millwall. Maybe they didn't fancy the player, or didn't think he was worth £4 million."

Rangers were right to avoid Nisbet, but Gerrard needs backing

Gerrard's interest in Nisbet in 2021 came after he had one of his best seasons for Hibs, while his striking options could have done with more support.

Alfredo Morelos and Kemar Roofe scored 26 between them, with Nisbet matching Morelos for Scottish Premiership strikes.

£4million would have been too much for Nisbet, who would not have upgraded the squad, nor would he have been a good long-term option.

However, if Gerrard does return to Rangers, the 49ers will need to back him, not just in terms of funding, but also with the right structure around him to ensure that they make successful signings to help bring glory back to Ibrox.

Big changes are coming.
