Sean Dyche explains why Premier League should avoid Rangers example amid Man City expulsion talk
Manchester City are at risk of finding themselves in a similar boat to Rangers in 2012.
Due to issues relating to finances at the Ibrox club, the Bears were forced into administration and ultimately expelled from the Scottish top-flight.
While in the end it was shared that these sanctions were unjust, it was a tricky period for the Glasgow side to endure.
Now, across the border into England, Manchester City are potentially looking at a similar level of punishment.
The Premier League side have been found guilty of 114 breaches of the English top-flight's rules.
With Sean Dyche now refereeing to Rangers' case as discussions continue on the sanctions that should be imposed.
How has Sean Dyche compared Rangers with Manchester City?
The Manchester City case is a story in football that has rocked the entire world, not just in England.
It is one of the biggest cheating scandals in sport, let alone in football.
Expulsion from the Premier League is an option on the table when it comes to possible punishments for the Manchester-based club, but not everyone is in agreement as to that being a fair sanction.
Former Everton manager, Dyche, is one of those who believes it would not be impactful enough, using Rangers' previous expulsion as the backbone of his belief.
Speaking on Keys and Gray Unleashed, the Englishman stated: "Yes, you can throw them out of the league, and all that, but let's imagine and talk about Rangers, when they did it, they went tic-tac-toe, and they are straight back in there, and then you go what is the point of that.
"For me, it should be a long-term pain."
Manchester City are currently appealing their case, with Premier League rules dictating an outcome must be decided within three months.
So, the Citizens will soon learn if they will follow the path that Rangers once had to go down in the Scottish football pyramid.
Why Sean Dyche gets Rangers-Manchester City verdict all wrong
Dyche may see Rangers competing back at the top of the Scottish Premiership and believe that it has barely affected the Glasgow side.
However, he could not be more wrong.
Since the decision to send the Bears down to the third-tier, it has been a long struggle to return back to the glory days.
And even then, the Glasgow side have yet to reach the summit.
Since 2012, Rangers have won just one top flight league title, a total that is likely to have been much higher should they have remained in the Premiership.
Rangers had won three titles in a row before going into administration.
The absence away from the top-flight then allowed bitter rivals Celtic to steal a march.
Rangers are now on their way back to trying to conquer the league on a year-by-year basis once again, and early signs under Derek McInnes suggest they are on the right path.
With Lawrence Shankland hopefully lifting number 56 come the end of the season.
Perhaps with City's resources and money, the sanctions may not be quite as impactful as it was against the G51 outfit, but the trophy cabinet proves that it did enact long-term pain.
