Scotland fans called out for Oli McBurnie abuse with Rangers question - 'Idiots'

Scotland fans may be taking out their frustration with Rangers on Oli McBurnie.

Some in the Tartan Army haven't taken kindly to the striker's return to the squad after five years and it could have something to do with the Gers.

The Hull City attacker played the full 90 minutes against Slovenia in the 0-0 draw, but received a mixed reception from the travelling supporters.

McBurnie has admitted in the past that he's a huge Rangers fan because of his family.

While the 30-year-old was born in Leeds, he got his love for the Scottish national team and the Light Blues from his parents and grandparents.

However, the Tartan Army don't seem to be big fans of the centre-forward, and that may be down to several reasons, including his admiration for the Govan side.

Are Scotland fans abusing Oli McBurnie because of Rangers connection?

McBurnie has made some unsavoury comments in the past about playing for Scotland.

During the striker's time at Sheffield United, he was dismissive about playing for the national side during a dressing-room conversation, which he later apologised for and clarified was just banter.

It's clear some in the Tartan Army are yet to forgive the Hull ace and STV Radio host Ewen Cameron has questioned their reasons.

The Hearts-daft pundit isn't the biggest fan of the Govan side, but wonders whether McBurnie's association with the Ibrox club has something to do with the abuse he has faced.

Speaking on the STV Radio Football Show on 28 September, Cameron said, "I would just like to say something to the Tartan Army, and it's not all the Tartan Army, but lay off McBurnie.

"Some of the abuse that he's got over the weekend, even after a brilliant performance, is bang out of order. These members of the Tartan Army should take a long, hard look at themselves.

"You're all idiots. And I'm going to ask this question. Is it because of what he said and because he's a Rangers fan? Is it a combination of both?"

Can Derek McInnes bring Oli McBurnie to Ibrox?

While there have been no suggestions that McBurnie wants to play for Rangers or that they want to buy him, it's something Derek McInnes may be inclined to possibly look at.

The Hull striker is the sort of hard-working player the Scottish manager admires.

Ryan Naderi has carved out a place in McInnes' plans mainly because of his tenacity and dedication in closing down opposition defences.

If the Gers need attacking reinforcements further down the line and want to add experience and a Scottish presence, McBurnie could be the answer.
