Rangers fans will rue having to watch Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell continue to fail at Ibrox.

The Gers' new sporting director appears to have played a significant role in the Scottish manager's appointment in G51, but things haven't gone to plan.

Martin's future at Ibrox feels unsure as supporters are already demanding a change in the Light Blues' dugout after winning just five of their first 15 matches of the 2025-26 season.

Andrew Cavenagh is also being asked to reassess Thelwell's appointment, but it looks like the new American owners at the Glaswegian outfit have no intention of making a change anytime soon.

Rangers show faith in Russell Martin and Kevin Thelwell with Robbie Thelwell appointment

Thelwell's son, Robbie Thelwell, is set to be appointed as the new head of recruitment at the Gers.

The Norwich City head of technical scouting and loan management is being tipped to move to Ibrox to work with his father.

With Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises willing to bring Robbie to the Light Blues, it appears they have no intention of making changes to the current management.

  • Robbie started working as a scout at Wolves between 2016 and 2020.
  • The 26-year-old was working at Aston Villa during Steven Gerrard's time there.
  • Thelwell's son has been at the Villans since 2020.

It's surprising to see the American owners considering making the appointment amid massive discontent among fans with the current manager and sporting director.

Since Robbie is supposedly on his way to Ibrox, the US consortium are undoubtedly showcasing their faith in Thelwell senior.

Cavenagh and the 49ers shouldn't be doubling down on a team that has failed to bring success to the Glaswegian outfit so far, and fans are right to be aggrieved by their recent decisions.

Andrew Cavenagh has to sack Russell Martin

Martin's sacking at Ibrox feels inevitable as supporters have grown weary of his style of play and excuses for failures at the Gers.

There wasn't much improvement from Rangers against Livingston, as a final-minute winner from Max Aarons was required to win 2-1 on 28 September.

Cavenagh can't continue to ignore fans, as they may soon turn their attention to the new owners for their lack of initiative in G51.

If things don't improve quickly, the situation at Ibrox will undoubtedly become even more toxic.
