Rangers' search for a new manager seems to be closer to ending after recent developments.

Real Madrid coach Davide Ancelotti is one candidate for the role that was vacated when Barry Ferguson was relieved of his interim duties.

The Italian seemed set to follow his father and Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti as he became the new manager of Brazil, which would have ruled him out of the running at Ibrox.

However, there was a stunning U-turn and he is understood to want to begin his managerial career this summer.

Ancelotti announcement made after Balague gives Rangers update

Guillem Balague reported (21 May) that the Gers search was down to two names, Ancelotti and former boss Steven Gerrard.

The Spanish giants announced on 23 May that they have reached an agreement with Ancelotti senior to part ways at the end of the season.

It said: "Real Madrid CF and Carlo Ancelotti have reached an agreement to end his tenure as Real Madrid manager.

"Our club wishes to express its gratitude and affection to one of the greatest legends of Real Madrid and world football."

That move should free the 35-year-old to take over the reins in Govan, if he decides that is the best move for his career.

Rangers would be taking a risk if they appoint Ancelotti

Ancelotti junior has worked under his father at several different clubs but does not have the experience needed to take over at Auchenhowie.

His appointment would be a major risk, even if he would bring an exciting tactical blueprint and contacts that could help the Light Blues in the transfer market.

Ancelotti's path so far.

The former Madrid coach could bring in the likes of David Alaba and Ferland Mendy if he is handed the role but there is no guarantee that he would be a success.

Gerrard is the safer option, he has already managed the Bears, guiding them to an unbeaten season and the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 campaign.

His return would bring the feel-good factor back, even if the Celtic side that Brendan Rodgers has built is a lot better than the ones that the former Liverpool man faced.

One thing is for sure, the 49ers need the situation to be sorted soon, there is far too much work to be done in terms of the playing squad for the managerial search to drag on.
