Rangers star Todd Cantwell has hit out at the standard of refereeing in Scotland after he claimed the officials frequently make "questionable" decisions against him.

Cantwell called for yellow cards to be more freely given by the referees as a warning to the aggressive defenders in an attempt to deter further heavy challenges.

He went on to question the consistency of the decision-making and when referees decide to give cautions and when they don't as he was baffled by the calls.

Speaking to The Rangers Review [2 April], Cantwell explained: "I think some of the tackles and some of the decisions are questionable.

"I have always found from my personal experience that the first tasty tackle should always be booked because it sets the tone and shows ‘you are not getting away with that’.

"The problem that I struggle with is the consistency of that because sometimes the tackle will be booked instantly and sometimes it won’t.

"Mine don’t tend to be yellow cards. It tends to be a yellow card for me if I am on the other side."

Todd Cantwell fumes at referees after Rangers incidents

Cantwell's claim comes amid plenty of criticism of officials in Scotland for inconsistent and confusing decisions, with the latest discussion surrounding the yellow cards given out yet another point raised against the referees.

Rangers in particular have been heavily crucial of referees already this season, with both Alan Muir and Willie Collum coming under fire for controversial calls against the Ibrox club, going as far as to suggest Collum must be banned from officiating their games.

Most recently they were left frustrated as the SPFL clash against Dundee at Dens Park was cancelled with under two hours notice after referee Don Robertson did not arrive at the game to make the decision until after the Rangers squad, leaving Chris Sutton fuming.

Rangers
Chris Sutton has been a vocal critic of Rangers.

Sutton has also recently discussed what he labelled as “conspiracy theories” after it was shared that officials in the SPFL don’t have to declare which team they support, leading to the possibility of having a Celtic fan refereeing a Rangers game and vice versa.

Cantwell has every right to call it out, that is the only chance of change coming.
