Rangers summer signing Lawrence Shankland failed to show his best for Scotland against Haiti overnight.

The 30-year-old has already sealed a free transfer to Ibrox ahead of the summer transfer window.

He has suggested that it has always been a dream to play for the Light Blues and it is one he is set to realise.

Before that, he has the small matter of a World Cup to deal with as the Tartan Army feature for the first time in 28 years.

An opening group-stage clash against Haiti came first at the summer tournament as fans watched on despite a 2am kick-off time at home.

Shankland wasn't able to impose himself in Boston, even while Steve Clarke's side made history.

Lawrence Shankland kept quiet for Scotland vs Haiti

The number nine is certainly well known for his sharp shooting and goal scoring exploits, but didn't get chance to prove himself on Scotland's return to the big stage.

It was always bound to be a nervy affair with so many days since a last World Cup outing and it turned out that way.

John McGinn's goal after 29 minutes made all the difference as chances were at a premium after that.

Shankland felt that as much as anyone as he failed to secure a clear cut chance despite his two shots on the day.

The Rangers man was afforded just 28 touches and was unfortunate to only complete seven passes.

He did still have seven touches in the Haiti penalty area, which was the most on the pitch.

That didn't stop him from putting a shift in defensively as he chipped in with four tackles and 11 duel wins to help his side to victory.

The striker was more than pleased with victory in the opening game, but will be annoyed with the lack of a goalscoring chance for himself.

Rangers star Shankland 'frustrated' in Scotland win vs Haiti

A historic win will certainly mean a lot to everyone involved with the Tartan Army, but Shankland will have wanted to score.

As a number nine, that will be his true aim for every game, but there wasn't truly an opportunity to do that against Haiti.

That was picked up on by online outlet The Scotsman overnight as they rated a six and picked up on his frustrations.

They said: "[He] worked his socks off, but never saw a proper sight of goal - a frustration given how good form he has been in recently. Probably dropped too deep for his liking."

That sums up the night for Shankland, who will now be looking ahead to clashes with Morocco and Brazil to grab his first World Cup goal.
