Rangers star James Tavernier destroyed by BBC pundit as 10-year comparison made

Scott Allan has savaged Rangers defender James Tavernier for not improving on his positioning in the last 10 years.

The BBC pundit told Clyde One Superscoreboard on 4 October, as quoted by the Daily Record, that it was the out ball when he was at Hibs as they were aware Tavernier would leave space in behind.

This comes after the Gers captain struggled in the 4-1 defeat against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League on 3 October.

Allan said: "When I was at Hibs even ten years ago, that was our out ball. When we had the ball, could we hit that space that was left in behind, because we knew Taverner wouldn't be there. It's the same to this day."

Allan's critique of Tavernier's defensive positioning, highlighting the inconsistency for a decade as an exploitable weakness, underscores a stark revelation about the captain's tactical development or lack thereof.

The 32-year-old's longevity and status at Ibrox are significantly buoyed by his goal-scoring ability from set-pieces and open play, which arguably masks his defensive deficiencies.

Had Tavernier not been such a prolific scorer, his role might have come under scrutiny much sooner, potentially affecting his regular starting status and he does seem to be nearing the end of his career at Ibrox.

This situation points to a broader discussion on player evaluation, where offensive contributions can overshadow defensive responsibilities, particularly in a full-back whose primary duty should also encompass defensive solidity.

Tavernier's failure to evolve in this aspect, despite years of professional experience, suggests a tactical oversight or reluctance to adapt, which might not be tolerated if his offensive output was less remarkable.

However, with Neraysho Kasanwirjo showing he can do a more than decent job at right-back, this season could be the one Gers have a new first choice option in that position.
