Martin Dowden believes the timing of Cyriel Dessers' goal for Rangers was "vital" in their 2-1 Scottish League Cup win over Motherwell on Sunday.

The Gers went into the second half of the game 1-0 down but turned things around by the end of the clash and left Hampden Park as 2-1 winners on 3 November.

Writing for the BBC Sport website (3 November), journalist Dowden shared his verdict on the performance of Rangers.

"The timing of Cyriel Dessers' goal, just after the break, was vital," he wrote. "It released so much of that negativity and the second-half display was a vast improvement."

Rangers have saved the job of Philippe Clement once again

Even though John Gilligan backed Philippe Clement publicly on Sky Sports (24 September), it still felt like a surprise to many that the Belgian kept his job after their 2-1 loss to Aberdeen on 30 October.

The Gers find themselves nine points adrift of both the Dons and Celtic, which is a shocking look for a team of Rangers' calibre.

At the start of the season, they were expected to be putting up a decent challenge for the title but instead, it feels like they're trying their best not to fall into fourth as Dundee United are hot on their heels.

If Rangers lost against Motherwell on Sunday and were knocked out of the cup, it would have been rather hard for Gilligan to keep Clement in his role, fortunately, however, that wasn't the case.

There's still time for things to change of course but at the moment, the Belgian's role looks safe thanks to the performance of his team against the Steelmen.
