Rangers are set for a massive summer of change again at Ibrox, with the 49ers and Andrew Cavenagh not willing to accept another average year.

James Tavernier has already moved on, with Lawrence Shankland signing from Hearts ahead of the transfer window even opening.

The Americans are not done there, though, and that could spell bad news for Jack Butland.

If Tavernier leaving without a real farewell proves anything, it's the cold-hearted nature of football, although many still disagree with how that played out.

Jack Butland could be next out at Ibrox

Butland has always been a divisive figure in Govan, with his sensational penalty save record blighted by consistent, silly mistakes.

Just take the final-day win over Falkirk, for example, where his bad touch from a simple pass resulted in an own goal to give the home side some hope.

That appears to have set Rangers on the lookout for new goalkeepers.

Anthony Patterson of Sunderland has now been explored, with Keith Downie reporting that the stopper is available for £8million this summer.

It is said, however, that it is more than the Bears want to spend, with English competition also high for the Stadium of Light outcast.

Thankfully, for Butland, he appears to have been given a reprieve for now.

Who could sign Jack Butland?

There haven't been many credible links for Butland during his time at Ibrox, but there is one that stands out above the rest.

English keepers are often courted in the Premier League to satisfy homegrown registration rules, rather than actually for their ability.

Butland is still not at that level and will be striving for regular football, rather than sitting in the stands every week, bringing in money.

Patterson isn't exactly a better option than the former Manchester United man, given he was loaned to Millwall after Sunderland were promoted last year.

The keeper is also another who makes frequent errors in his game, so it wouldn't be an upgrade.

Thankfully, the £8million pricetag is not seen as value for money, but if Rangers' exploration of the move proves anything, it's that the clock is ticking on Butland at Ibrox.

With only one season left on his contract, things are starting to change.
