Rangers made a "good decision" by letting Ben Williamson depart Ibrox on a full-time decision as he needs to be playing regular football, Derek Ferguson has said.

The Gers announced on Thursday (4 January) that the academy product had joined the League One side on a permanent deal after his six-month loan spell at Championship outfit Partick Thistle came to an end on Monday (1 January).

There was some surprise among supporters that the 22-year-old was allowed to leave as he was viewed as player with potential at Rangers.

However, Ferguson - speaking exclusively to Ibrox News - understands the rationale behind the decision and thinks Williamson can now work his way back up the leagues.

"I watched him at Arbroath a few times, he went out on loan to Partick Thistle as well," said Ferguson.

"You can see there's a player in there but there comes a time when you need to part company if it's not gonna happen for you, there comes a time when you need to go out and play football and I think it's a good decision.

"I know Hamilton are in League One at the moment but there's a player in there and sometimes for whatever reason it just doesn't quite happen.

"So, I applaud the young man that he's gonna go out and do it and go down the leagues and hopefully maybe work his way back up. There's a wee bit of dig about the boy as well.

"But you could say that about a number of wee boys so it's unfortunate but that's the life of a football player."
