The Belgian FA are looking to hire a homegrown manager this time amid links to Rangers boss Philippe Clement, according to Mark Pirie.

The Daily Record journalist reported on 20 November that the Gers head coach has appeared as a surprising name on the shortlist of candidates.

Clement is facing the heat at Ibrox as his side are currently in third place and nine points off the top of the table.

Pirie wrote: "After rounding off a disappointing Nations League campaign with defeat to Israel, the Belgium boss is facing mounting pressure over his future with Record Sport understanding Clement is a surprising name to emerge on a shock list of potential successors with the Royal Belgian Football Association looking to go with a homegrown coach this time."

Philippe Clement may be open to Rangers exit

Clement has not publicly distanced himself from the speculation linking him with the Belgium job, which might suggest he's considering the possibility, especially given his precarious position at Ibrox.

With the team sitting third in the SPFL and trailing by nine points, the Belgian's tenure at the club is under significant scrutiny.

The allure of managing one's home country, with a talented squad and the chance to be at the World Cup in 2026, could be a tempting prospect for Clement.

This scenario presents an intriguing crossroads for him and his options will be either to fight to turn around Rangers' fortunes or to potentially embrace a new challenge with the national team.

The coming weeks will be crucial to observe whether Clement commits to resolving the issues at Gers or if he sees the Belgian job as an escape route, possibly even a step up in his managerial career.

It remains fair to say that most fans at Ibrox would fancy if he picks the latter as they want change at the club.
