Rangers have interviewed former player Carlos Bocanegra for the club’s vacant director of football role, according to The Athletic.

The position has been empty since Ross Wilson departed Ibrox in April to join Premier League club Nottingham Forest.

The Athletic added that the Gers are currently using a headhunting agency to appoint an appropriate successor for Wilson.

Ongoing process

The position is a very important one at Rangers, and definitely needs to be filled sooner rather than later in order to allow manager Michael Beale to focus on getting things right on the pitch.

Obviously there are no fixtures to worry about right now, which has allowed Beale to bring the likes of Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling, Kieran Dowell and Sam Lammers to Ibrox.

But the boss needs help in bringing in more new faces, as well as the chance to take a step back on start working on issues such as tactics and how his team will approach the new campaign.

Bocanegra is certainly an interesting choice, with the 44-year-old knowing the club well having made 41 Gers appearances between 2011 and 2012.

But he only just signed a multi-year contract extension with MLS club Atlanta in November 2021, where he currently serves as technical director and vice president.
