Rangers exit on cards as Dinamo Zagreb ready to take Borna Barisic home in Ibrox update

Dinamo Zagreb have shown interest in Rangers defender Borna Barisic ahead of his contract expiring at the end of the season, according to Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper reported [8 January, page 69] that the current Croatian Football League champions are interested in bringing Barisic back home, with the player moving to Glasgow in 2018.

The 31-year-old left Ojijek in August 2018 for a reported £2.2million fee, as per BBC Sport, and signed a contract extension after impressing at Ibrox, which is set to expire at the end of this season.

Long-standing servant

Barisic has given it his all since joining Rangers in 2018, totalling 224 appearances in Blue, while notching nine goals across all competitions.

However, under the new reign of Philippe Clement, it has become evident that the full-back's future at the club is dwindling as he struggles with injury. The Belgian manager is after a new defender, and with no sign of a contract extension for the Croat, Barisic is set to be replaced.

A return to former side Dinamo Zagreb would be a fitting ending to a loyal six-year stay at Rangers, giving him another opportunity to prove himself at one of the biggest clubs in Croatia.

The player joined Dinamo Zagreb in 2015 as a 22-year-old but was unable to make an impact, being loaned out to NK Lokomotiva almost instantly. Upon his return, the player was transferred back to Osijek, having made just a single appearance at the club.

Now, having proven himself at Rangers, winning the Scottish Premiership and the Viaplay Scottish League Cup, while performing regularly in the Champions League and Europa League.

He has also amassed 35 caps for his country, playing in the World Cup and the EUROs.
