Rangers' loanee Derek Cornelius will head back to parent club Marseille after barely featuring for the Bears.

The Canadian international looked to be a key player early on for the Ibrox side but would turn out to be a flop signing.

He started six of the first seven league matches in which he was available for.

However, an injury would halt his momentum, and after being sidelined, upon his return, Cornelius was cast aside.

Danny Rohl then ultimately informed the centre-back that when fit, he would be training alongside the youth team instead.

While it was a harsh decision, the German may have been proven right based on the latest World Cup scenes.

How Derek Cornelius proved Danny Rohl right

Canada secured one of the biggest wins so far in the 2026 World Cup with a 6-0 victory against Qatar.

Cornelius, as he did against Bosnia and Herzegovina, was selected to start against the Asian side.

While Cornelius put in a solid showing in the inaugural group games, his performance in the first-half against Qatar was a little shaky.

The inconsistency in his displays perhaps showcase he was not in a position to play a key role for the Gers.

After picking up an early yellow card with winger Akram Afif easily besting him, manager Jesse Marsch decided to withdraw him at half-time.

The Canucks controlled the majority of the game, and truthfully, Cornelius had little to do defensively.

However, even in those rare moments, he struggled. The Canadian failed to win any of his ground duels - a zero per cent success rate.

And ended up committing just two fouls in 45 minutes. If he remained on the pitch, there was a real chance he could have been sent off with his next foul.

Struggling against the worst side in Group B should be a cause for concern for Canadians.

Why Cornelius and Rohl rift was odd

Rohl completely setting Cornelius aside was strange, and there is still no exact reason provided as to why that decision was made.

After the season ended, Cornelius lifted the lid on the situation, revealing that he "felt disrespected" by Rohl's actions.

He later went on to confirm he was left in the dark over his ousting: "But I wasn’t given a solid reason as to why I was not considered.

“It was tough. It was really tough. I was hoping the situation would change."

After the injury issues and being outcasted by Rohl, Cornelius will no longer wear the blue of the Bears.

And his arrival will be knocked down as a what-if signing if he had never picked up that injury blow so soon into the German's arrival in Govan.
