Rangers blame for Samuel Edozie Southampton loan collapse accepted amid 'circus' at Ibrox

Derek Ferguson

At the start of 2024, former Rangers star Derek Ferguson agreed to become Ibrox News' newest pundit. Ferguson started his career at Ibrox, making his league debut for the club aged 17 in a draw against Hearts in 1984. He eventually left Rangers in 1990 after making 91 league appearances and winning two Scottish titles. Ferguson went on to play for the likes of Hearts, Sunderland and Falkirk before retiring after a spell at Raith Rovers in 2006. Now, Ibrox News is delighted to have the former midfielder sharing his weekly thoughts on all things Rangers.

Russell Martin blaming Rangers for the Deadline Day failure to sign Samuel Edozie sounds accurate to Derek Ferguson.

The Southampton winger appeared to be on the way to Ibrox on a late, late loan move before the transfer window shut with the winger said to be "keen" on heading to Glasgow [The Athletic, 31 August], only for the deal to collapse after the deadline had passed.

Saints boss, and former Gers defender, Martin parked the blame at the Light Blues door after they reportedly pulled the plug late on [Daily Echo, 1 September] and ex-Ibrox midfielder Ferguson believes him in light of the multitude of failings at the club in recent years.

Edozie subsequently joined Anderlecht on loan where he currently has one goal and one assist in six appearances.

Philippe Clement has since struggled in wide areas as Rabbi Matondo was injured for as long as three months straight after the deadline [Football Scotland, 5 September], and now Oscar Cortes is hurt again, potentially facing fourth months out [Open Goal, October].

Russell Martin blamed Rangers for loan failure

Philippe Clement
Rangers manager Philippe Clement missed out on Samuel Edozie.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News Ferguson said: "I've not got a clue but if you listen to Russell he's come out and he says it was Rangers' fault and do you know something? He's probably right.

"Aye it's been a bit of a circus at the moment. There's so many things where Rangers let themselves down big time.

"And that just looks like another one. So if Russell Martin's come out and said that, do you know something? I believe him.

"Rangers probably have been at fault, as they have been with a number of issues over the course of the last number of years, so that wouldn't surprise me one single bit."
