Neil Doncaster reveals next steps in Rangers and Celtic agreement
In the Scottish Cup in March at Ibrox, fans invaded the pitch after the Hoops won on penalties.
After the disorder, both sets of away fans were banned from Old Firm derbies.
In the two recent matches between Rangers and Celtic, only home fans were in attendance.
The Gers dominated the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final at Ibrox and the Scottish Premiership match at Parkhead.
Derek McInnes got the better of Martin O'Neill's team twice and it would arguably have been much more special for some had away supporters been allowed in G40.
Will Rangers and Celtic away-fans ban continue?
The Old Firm derby is Scottish football's biggest fixture and not allowing away fans to attend is a bit unflattering for the league.
Doncaster has suggested that authorities had no choice but to take the drastic decision after the scenes in Govan.
The SPFL chief specifically mentions that the organisation concluded that there would be no away fans at domestic matches involving the Glaswegian outfits "this season".
It's clear the higher-ups want to resolve the situation quickly and work with the two clubs to reach a favourable conclusion.
Speaking on The Price of Football on 9 October, Doncaster said, "We got to a place where we agreed that there would be no away fans at SPFL matches involving Celtic and Rangers this season.
"We believe very strongly that the game needs away fans and we're looking to work with clubs to get back to a situation as soon as possible of having away fans back at these games."
How Scottish Premiership title could be defined right after New Year
Rangers have clawed their way to being just two points behind Celtic after an underwhelming start under Derek McInnes.
After seven games, it looks like the two Old Firm clubs will be battling it out for the league title, with Hearts not looking as convincing under Wouter Vrancken.
O'Neill had no answers for McInnes' tactics in the back-to-back fixtures, raising questions about his future at Parkhead.
The next league game between the two Glaswegian clubs is scheduled for 3 January and another win for the Light Blues could potentially set them up as favourites to taste glory in May.
It remains to be seen what steps the SPFL will take regarding the ban on away fans, and whether any resolution can be found before the new year or the split, when the two clubs are likely to meet again.
