Michael Stewart astounded by 'incredible' Vanja Dragojevic controversy in Rangers vs Hibernian

Vanja Dragoevic was involved in controversy in his first Scottish Premiership contest for Rangers.

The midfielder was selected for his maiden Gers start by Derek McInnes for Sunday's clash against Hibernian at Ibrox.

However, it was not the start the 20-year-old was hoping for in front of his new home supporters.

Dragojevic was pinged for a penalty after he was judged to have pulled down Jason Kerr in the area.

There was initial confusion as to why the VAR was even called over to the sidelines to have another look at the incident, such was the tenunous nature of it.

However, Don Robertson decided it was enough to warrant a penalty and Josh Campbell comfortably tucked away the penalty.

The Ibrox faithful made their displeasure heard as soon as the decision was awarded and there was general disbelief that it had been given.

Dragojevic was awarded a yellow card to really rub salt in the wounds, with Lawrence Shankland among those looking on in disbelief.

But there was nothing that could be done to change the decision, and despite the disbelief of the Rangers players Robertson stuck to his guns.

Pundit Michael Stewart reacted immediately to the controversy on Premier Sports as the decision was unfolding was astounded by the decision Robertson landed on.

He said: "It doesn't look good for Dragojevic, but that's not a penalty kick, that's not a penalty.

"I don't know why VAR are looking at this. Jason Kerr falls to the ground without, they just don't need to be getting involved with that.

"It looks like they're going to give a penalty kick. It's absolutely incredible, it really is.

"Nobody's looked at that in real time, it's way after the fact, I just do not see there's any need for VAR to be getting involved in that."

Youssef Chermiti injury adds to Rangers woes

It was a really disappointing opening for Rangers, and the sight of Youssef Chermiti being stretchered off only added to their disappointment.

Earlier on Sunday, it was reported that Rangers had rejected a bid from Galatasaray for the young Portuguese forward.

Chermiti appeared to hurt himself when colliding with one of the advertising hoardings behind the Hibernian goal, and needed treatment before being taken from the field.

It was the last thing McInnes needed to see given the struggles he has had with his attackers early during his Rangers career.

Everyone will be praying it is not a serious injury for the striker.
