Kai Fotheringham may have been unlucky as Rangers beat St Johnstone 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The 23-year-old attacker received a red card in the 74th minute from Chris Graham after a VAR review of his challenge on Nicolas Raskin.

In the pouring conditions, with the scoreline heavily in the Gers' favour, the Scottish forward slid into the Belgium international.

While Fotheringham made contact with the ball, he caught Raskin around the shin with his follow-through, and he was deemed to have committed serious foul play at Ibrox.

Looking at the still image of the point of contact, the Glaswegian outfit's fans would argue the sending-off was correct.

However, Mark Clattenburg and Bobby Madden see it differently.

Did Kai Fotheringham deserve red card in Rangers vs St Johnstone?

Fotheringham pleaded his innocence at Ibrox, but the on-field referee decided his challenge warranted a red card after VAR official Andrew Dallas asked him to check the screen.

Former FIFA referee Madden doesn't believe the St Johnstone attacker's challenge met the criteria for a sending-off.

Clattenburg, who was a Premier League official for more than a decade, agrees with the assessment and feels the still image doesn't show the full picture.

While Graham clearly felt Fotheringham put Raskin in danger, his peers disagree.

Speaking on So Near, Yet So VAR on 25 October, Madden said, "The contact is absolutely minimal. You need to look at the full criteria. And for me, it doesn't meet it."

Clattenburg added, "If you look at the point of contact, and this is what destroys me, you'll see it on Twitter, and that still image. If it weren't a red card, everybody would be showing that picture and going, 'How's that not a red card?'

"But you don't see the context of it. This is the problem with still pictures. This is the way the game has gone now. It's bonkers.

"For me, when you see this challenge, does he put his opponent in danger? No. So therefore it doesn't meet the criteria of a red card."

What Derek McInnes got right in win vs St Johnstone at Ibrox

Derek McInnes went back to playing Kevin Kelsy and Ryan Naderi up top against St Johnstone after Rangers dropped points at Dens Park.

The Czechia international struggled with the physicality of the game against Dundee and he's better suited to playing with the former Portland Timbers strikers up top.

Badredine Bouanani and Minsu Kim have also given the Scottish manager reason to continue with them as his wide players.

McInnes has been reluctant to use his bench at the Light Blues, but he used all five substitutes in the 4-0 win.

Fans would like to see some fringe players get more opportunities in upcoming matches, as fatigue is clearly affecting some players' performances.
