Jack Butland has had a journey of a season for Rangers in 2024-25, with a wide range of performance exhibited from the experienced goalkeeper.

Butland has been the hero on occasions - including a huge reason why his side face Athletic Club in the Europa League quarter-finals from this week - and has also shown some embarrassing moments in a Rangers shirt at times.

Rangers were attempting to gather momentum ahead of their European tie when they faced Hibernian at Ibrox on Saturday (5 April).

Butland hammered as Rangers lose at Ibrox

Butland was lamented live on BBC Scotland (5 April, 15:56) by Kenny Macintyre as Rangers suffered yet another Scottish Premiership setback.

Ferguson has endured a real mixed bag of results and performances during his short stint so far in the Ibrox dugout, and Saturday reverted to that sort of type.

Butland made a shocking mistake in the first half which set the tone for Hibs to claim their eventual 2-0 win in Govan.

"It's a dreadful error from Jack Butland once again, the Rangers goalkeeper," Macintyre admitted during the half-time break.

Ferguson will keep faith with Butland as Athletic Club come calling, with Rangers looking to keep up their reputation as a different beast in the Europa League.

Gers have five days to prepare for the first leg, back at Ibrox, with a hiked atmosphere anticipated.

Ferguson looks to inspire different animal in Europe

Rangers have all their eggs in the European basket, and they have set aside their indifferent and inconsistent league performances to favour the Europa League.

Athletic Club will, on paper, provide a much tougher test than Hibs - but will certainly have to deal with a tidal wave of the Ibrox crowd.

Butland will look to return on song on Thursday and will expect to have plenty more action on his doorstep.

The Gers support will be as baffled as anyone how their side are just able to unlock another gear for European nights, yet falter against beatable sides far too regularly in the league.

After the first leg against this year's final hosts Bilbao, Rangers take on Aberdeen next Sunday (13 April).
