Keith Hackett in 'disbelief' at footage as silly Rangers player to pay the price
Keith Hackett cannot understand what was going through Cammy Devlin's head as he was sent off for Rangers.
Devlin could have cost his team as the Gers only narrowly overcame Jablonec 1-0 at Ibrox on Thursday.
The Gers had a Ryan Naderi goal to thank for the slender first-leg win in their UEFA Conference League playoff qualifier.
Second-half substitute Devlin had been on the field for just five minutes when shown a straight red card.
That came after VAR flagged a studs-up challenge from the midfielder on Jiri Slama.
There was initially confusion over the incident, with many Gers fans thinking the VAR check was for a penalty, but the right call was made.
Why Cammy Devlin will pay price for Rangers red
Devlin will now serve a European suspension, meaning he will miss the return fixture in the Czech Republic next week.
That is a massive game for Derek McInnes, who knows that failing to qualify for UEFA's third-rate competition would seriously ramp up the pressure on his job already.
It is another personal setback for summer signing Devlin, meanwhile, and one he can have no complaints over.
"This was clearly the correct decision by the match officials. This is a serious foul play challenge and a red card offence," Hackett exclusively told Ibrox News.
"Sometimes I look in disbelief at the actions of a challenge like this and wonder why, in the age of VAR, a player takes such a risk."
Hackett was not alone in tearing into Devlin for his sending off against Jablonec.
What did Derek McInnes have to say about Devlin red?
Had Rangers failed to hold onto their lead, McInnes likely would have been fuming at Devlin.
He may have been already, in truth, but he did not let that show post-match.
“Having seen it again, it’s a red card, there’s no debate," McInnes told reporters. "But I actually think it looks worse than it was.
“He’s caught the boy on the shin and it looks terrible. The stills of it, it looks like a red card day all day long.
"But I think it looks worse than it actually was. Not ideal."
Devlin will now have to wait for his next opportunity and make sure he makes a positive impact, rather than potentially costing his side.
