Jordan Campbell: Porteous made ridiculous decision but Rangers deserved win

Ryan Porteous was shown a straight red for a dangerous challenge on Joe Aribo as Rangers beat Hibernian 2-1 on Sunday.

The Hibs player slid in with his legs high and even if he won the ball, he was endangering the safety of Aribo as it could've been a potential leg breaker had he made contact.

Referee Nick Walsh's decision to show a straight red sparked a debate online, but The Athletic's Jordan Campbell was certain he made the right call.

In his Athletic Q&A's, Campbell responded to a fan who wrote, "Poor Ryan Porteous! Even when he’s sent off for a dangerous challenge he’s still got that ridiculous smirk on his face."

To which he responded, "Haven't seen a replay yet but to even give the referee a decision to make when you're 1-0 is ridiculous. Cost his team today but Rangers deserve credit for the second half."

Made the right call

If a player goes in studs up like that, whether the intent is malicious or not, or even if he's not made any contact, that has to be a sending off.

Even though the players wear protection, if they get caught at the wrong spot, it could have devastating effects.

Porteous is known to have that kind of nasty streak which is fine but certainly unacceptable when he's endangering the safety of other players.

Yes, the red did certainly help Gers get back into the game, but they appeared to be a different side in the second half.

Steven Gerrard must have had a real go at some of the players because the first half was as poor as it gets from this Gers side.

The lack of consistency has cost them several times this season and they need to improve quickly.
