Steven Gerrard could be announced as the next Rangers manager during the international break.

Rangers relieved Russell Martin of his duties after possibly one of the worst reigns in Gers history.

Jermain Defoe has been linked with the Rangers job, but amid the speculation, he has revealed something that will make Gers fans only favour the return of Gerrard even more.

Steven Gerrard’s ice-cold Rangers message after title win - ‘Do It Again’

Defoe joined Rangers at the back end of his career but was still a hit at Ibrox.

The former English international netted 32 times in over 70 appearances for the Gers, and though he is fondly remembered in Glasgow, now isn't the time for him to return as head coach.

While talking on talkSPORT on Tuesday, Defoe opened up on Gerrard's mentality behind closed doors.

"I remember when we won the league and Stevie come in, and one of the first things he said was 'okay we won the league, we've got to do it again'.

"That's the sort of pressure that he got from above, and that's the sort of pressure he put on the players, it's as simple as that."

Steven Gerrard's record at Rangers:

  • Games: 193
  • Wins: 125
  • Draws: 42
  • Losses: 26

The sheer mentality of Gerrard could be exactly what Rangers need right now to get back to normal winning ways.

Gerrard could be a low-risk move for Rangers

Gerrard is currently out of work since departing Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, meaning he wouldn't require any compensation for his services.

The former Liverpool legend is loved at Ibrox, and although there may be better long-term options, its appearing very important that Rangers need a quick fix.

Gerrard would instil a winning mentality, and for that reason, Andrew Cavenagh and the 49ers need to have him at the top of their list.
