Jack Butland immediately reacts as Lawrence Shankland made Rangers captain

Rangers have officially confirmed Lawrence Shankland as their new captain.

Derek McInnes has once again backed his new striker to take the highest honour in his first season at Ibrox.

Shankland was also his captain as Hearts, as they were 90 minutes away from the Scottish Premiership title at Tynecastle last season.

Now, they’ll attempt to bring glory back at Ibrox, with the season beginning on Friday night away at Dundee United.

With James Tavernier moving on at the end of last season, Shankland has big boots to fill.

And plenty at Rangers are delighted with the news, including those who were even sold like Jack Butland.

Ibrox News heavily covered Shankland’s move to Rangers over the summer, with Tynecastle raided several times.

McInnes then followed, with Cammy Devlin making it three new arrivals from their Edinburgh rivals.

Despite that rivalry and two defeats last season, Butland was happy to see the changes made at his former club.

Taking to his Instagram stories after Shankland was confirmed as new Rangers captain, he kept things short and sweet.

Now at Hull City, the goalkeeper reshared the post with a clapping emoji and a Union Jack.

What did Lawrence Shankland say about Rangers captaincy?

It was a moment of pure joy, with the boyhood Rangers fan unable to take the smile off his face.

Shankland faced the media at Auchenhowie on Wednesday, and shared his absolute delight at the honour.

“I can’t wait for Friday now," he started.

"I was buzzing to wear the armband in Spain, to lead the club I have supported will be a huge moment, but we have a job to do and I will be fully focused on that, but I will take a moment to enjoy it.”

You can already imagine that Shankland was ready to fulfil his dream of simply playing for Rangers.

But now confirmed as captain as well, you fear for the Dundee United defence on Friday, with his first official goal in blue going to go down like an absolute treat.

He will be desperate to get it at Tannadice, too.

With Youssef Chermiti likely alongside him, Rangers are going to have a really terrifying frontline for opposition defences.

That's with Ryan Naderi and Bojan Miovski also to choose from, with McInnes simply spoilt for choice.

Shankland said it best though, he wants a squad full of leaders, pointing out the likes of Devlin, Ben Godfrey and Dan Neil, too.

That's what will win Rangers the Scottish Premiership title, if successful, proving he's exactly the right man for the job.
