Derek McInnes has shown real growth at Rangers after a slow start to the season.

The Scottish manager got back to winning ways after the Gers beat Simo Valakari's St Johnstone 4-0 at Ibrox.

After dropping points in an underwhelming display against Dundee at Dens Park, the Light Blues dominated the Saints in challenging weather conditions.

McInnes' team are now on an eight-game unbeaten run, with just one draw during that period.

After the first few weeks of the season, fans in G51 worried about their team's prospects after being knocked out of two European competitions, but the ex-Hearts boss has found some stability since.

The 55-year-old head coach has taken some time to find the right tactical setup at the Govan side and seems to have finally found it.

How James Penrice has been pivotal for Rangers

James Penrice's arrival flew under the radar at Ibrox in the summer, but he has arguably been one of their best signings.

The 27-year-old has come straight into the starting lineup and pipped Tuur Rommens in the pecking order.

In the two Old Firm derbies, McInnes' decision to play the AEK Athens loanee as an inverted full-back was one of the biggest reasons Martin O'Neill was left stumped.

Since featuring the Scottish defender in a slightly different role, which was also seen against St Johnstone, the Govan side have unlocked a way to play fast-flowing football.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on 24 October, Andy Halliday said, "I think Rangers are excellent, and I haven't used the superlative excellent in association with Rangers for a long period of time.

"I think Rangers are excellent when they turn the ball over against the opposition. How quickly they attack from turning the ball over to scoring or creating a chance.

"A big thing for that has actually been the addition of Penrice in the middle of the pitch. They were giving up an overload against every team for the first games of the season.

"But now they're more front-foot, aggressive and turning the ball over in really good areas. Within three to four seconds, they're now creating chances from it."

Derek McInnes has perfect new attacking setup at Ibrox

McInnes has had his favourites at Rangers this season and that has been evident in recent weeks with the mostly unchanged starting lineups.

Djeidi Gassama has been putting in some encouraging displays for the Gers in the current campaign, but his end-product has let the team down.

The Scottish manager finally dropped the former Sheffield Wednesday winger to the bench and played Minsu Kim on the left-wing for the first time against St Johnstone.

Badredine Bouanani and the South Korea international look like the perfect combination out wide for the Glaswegian outfit.

Ryan Naderi and Kevin Kelsy play well off each other and McInnes should keep using them together.

After what was seen against St Johnstone, it wouldn't make sense for the Scottish manager to make any changes to his attacking personnel for the upcoming fixtures.
