Darren Bent couldn't believe what he was hearing as he learned of reports Graham Potter would be interested in taking charge at Rangers.

Philippe Clement has come under fire at Ibrox this season, with his future seemingly decided on a week-by-week basis and potential replacements mooted regularly as his side struggles to compete on all fronts.

Co-host Andy Goldstein said live on talkSPORT [29 October, 5:52pm] that Potter would be interested in the Gers job, prompting Bent to offer a swift response.

Bent said: "Rangers? What's going on?"

Graham Potter arrival would be a dreamland scenario for Rangers

Rangers are believed to be supportive of Clement in his efforts this season while John Gilligan remains as interim chairman at Ibrox [Gordon Dalziel], but the stance could change should a top-class appointment become a possibility.

There has been talk in recent days of former Chelsea boss Potter being open to the opportunity of succeeding Clement, albeit some have shot those reports down.

Potter may have tarnished his reputation somewhat after a torrid time in charge of Chelsea but still, his Brighton side displayed an exciting brand of attacking football in the Premier League and a clear identity, something which has been missing at Rangers this year.

All those at Rangers understand the monumental task ahead of challenging Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership and an appointment of Potter's calibre would be huge to the landscape of Scottish football.

Whether or not Potter would consider taking on the challenge at Ibrox given the widely reported torrid finances in Glasgow remains to be seen and, admittedly, the chances of the rumours coming to fruition are slim at best.

However, a slim chance is better than none and if the speculation is to be believed, Rangers must value progressing the club back to the pinnacle of the SPFL over loyalty to Clement and throw everything they can at Potter to succeed the Belgian.
